Live below your means, not above them

Let's face it many of us love champagne taste but only have a beer budget. How do we compensate for this? We put things that we really don't need on credit; furniture, home entertainment centers, vacations, etc. Stop this! First of all get rid of all credit cards; they are nothing more than a temptation to spend money you don't have in the first place. If you can't pay cash for something then you don't need it. Next, sit down and make a list of your expenses. Where can you cut back? Do you really need the premium cable package? Can you get by on eating out once a week instead of three times? Is that club membership really worth it? Couldn't you get just as good a workout from running or playing tennis for free? Once you've established areas that you can scale back, take the money you were spending and save it.

Raises and bonuses

Save any and all raises and bonuses you receive. It seems like every time there's an adjustment to our salary we need to go out and spend that money; whether it be on gifts, a new car, or a bigger home. As tempting as it is don't do it. Instead take that money and invest it wisely either in a Roth IRA, mutual funds, or the stock market. Not a savvy investor? CD's are a good option if you're looking to increase your value without risk.

Most companies offer a 401k option. It's important that you contribute the maximum amount that your company will match. Anything beyond that amount, in my opinion, should be invested in another vehicle. I'm a stay-at-home mom and my husband contributes the maximum amount his company will match in his 401k. I have a Roth IRA set up thru my financial planner with automatic monthly contributions. We took a chunk of our savings and invested that in the stock market. You would certainly need to establish the best investment option for your situation. I do recommend that you do a lot of research in this area to make sure you make the right decision. Afterall this is your retirement money we're talking about.

Part-time job

A lot of Baby Boomers that retire go on to work a part-time job in an area they have interest in. The beauty of this position that you're in is that you've already put in your years in your career and now you get to reap the benefits of that. Retiring early means that your money needs to last you perhaps 10 years longer than you originally expected. And with rising longevity you don't want to be faced with running out of money during your last five years of life. Say you've always had an interest in reading. This is a great time to take a part-time job at a book store and enjoy the benefit of a discount on merchandise. Maybe you enjoy helping others learn; become a part-time instructor at a local college. That paycheck you're getting means less money you have to use from your retirement account.

If you're not prepared to change your lifestyle and scrimp as much as possible then early retirement might not be for you. For those of you who have already been saving, investing, and cutting back enjoy your retirement because it's just around the corner.

Babies born prematurely may require special care during their first 2 years of life. This is especially true if the baby weighed 3 pounds or less at birth.

Premature Baby's Growth and Development

Take your baby to your doctor's office soon after the baby leaves the hospital. The doctor will check the baby's weight gain and inquire of how the baby is doing at home.

Discuss with your doctor about feeding the premature baby. He may recommend vitamins, iron and special formula if the baby is bottle-fed. Doctors give vitamins to premature babies to help them grow and stay healthy. The doctor may also prescribe extra iron for a premature baby for at least four months. At four months of age a premature baby will have about the same amount of iron as a full-term baby, however, your doctor may still have a premature baby take iron drops for a year or more.

Premature babies are usually smaller than full-term babies for the first 2 years of life. They usually catch up after a while. Keep a record of your premature baby's development. Your doctor will need to know how active the baby is, when your baby sits up for the first time and crawls for the first time for example.

Premature Baby's Immunization Schedule

Immunization or "shots" are given to premature babies at the same ages they are given to full-term babies. Some doctors may recommend a flu shot for a premature baby when he or she is 6 months of age. There is a chance that premature babies will become sicker with the flu more often than full-term babies. He may also recommend the entire family taking flu shots to help protect the premature baby in the home.

Premature Baby's Feeding Schedule

Right after birth, premature babies need 8 to 10 feedings per day. Do not wait longer than 4 hours between. Premature babies are very susceptible to dehydration. Waiting longer than 4 hours between feedings may cause a premature baby to become dehydrated. A good rule of thumb is if your premature baby is wetting 6 to 8 diapers per day then he or she is getting enough breast milk or formula. Spitting up is often a common problem of premature babies after feedings. Be sure to talk to your doctor if your premature baby spits up a lot. He or she may not gain enough weight if this occurs.

Solid Food for Premature Babies

Four to six months after the baby's original due date (not the birth date) is usually the time doctors advise putting a premature baby on solid food. Putting premature babies on solid foods before this time could create a choking hazard. Premature babies need more time to develop their swallowing abilities. If the premature baby has medical problems, the doctor may prescribe a special diet.

Premature Babies Sleep Time

Premature babies usually sleep more hours each day than a full-term baby; however, they sleep for shorter periods of time and wake up more often. Put your premature baby to bed on its back, never on its stomach. Use firm mattresses and pillows. Sleeping on the stomach or on soft mattresses and pillows has been known to increase baby's risk of sudden infant death syndrome (this is for full-term babies as well as the premature baby).

Common vision and hearing problems in premature babies include:

Traveling with your premature baby in cars poses extra problems. Review the following information to help you transport your premature baby in a car safely:

? Select a car safety seat that fits your premature baby
? Do not use a car safety seat with a shield or tray
? Place rolled receiving blankets on both sides of your premature baby to center him or her in the car safety seat.
? Place a rolled diaper or washcloth between your premature baby's diaper area and the crotch strap to keep your baby from slipping down.
? Do not place the rolled diaper or receiving blankets behind or under the baby.
? Your premature baby may need to use a car bed that meets Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards to allow babies to travel while lying down if he or she has any of the following while in a car safety seat:

1. A decrease in oxygen levels
2. Slow heart rate
3. Apnea (breathing stops for a moment or two)

Other reasons babies may need a car bed rather than a car seat includes:
? Problems with breathing when sitting upright or semi-reclined
? Decreased muscle control
? Bones that break easy
? Recent spine surgery
? Baby is wearing a cast

At this time car beds are designed for babies and not larger children. They vary in design. All car beds must be installed lengthwise with the baby's head toward the center of the car.

Because everyone loved their own baby blankets so much, it should be no surprise that new parents are concerned with picking out the right blanket for their newborns. What is SIDS?
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is a mystery by definition. The cause of a SIDS death cannot be found even after an autopsy and an investigation. However, SIDS deaths have been reduced since the medical community began educating parents about baby sleeping safety. Although it cannot be proven, suffocation may be one of the biggest culprits of SIDS.

According to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, almost one third of SIDS related deaths are from suffocation in soft bedding. Babies should not be put to sleep in a warm pile of blankets or pillows. Instead, your baby should be wearing sleep-wear that is warm and safe, and be in an environment where nothing could cause suffocation if your baby were to turn over.

Five ways to improve your baby's safety
The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests that parents do the following things to improve baby safety:
? Always put the baby to sleep on its back.
? The sleeping area should be a firm mattress.
? There should be no soft, fluffy blankets around the sleeping baby.
? The room should be well-ventilated and no smoking around a sleeping baby.
? Make sure your baby isn't overheating while sleeping.

Common myths about baby sleeping safety
Some studies have shown that new parents do not follow baby safety guidelines because of their traditions. We tend to respect the opinion of our grandmother, for example, more than an information web site. However, it can be precisely these traditions that are dangerous to your baby's safety.

One popular practice is to put the baby asleep on its side rather than its back. The fear is that the baby will choke on its own vomit, but this is not true. Studies have repeatedly shown that babies are much more likely to swallow or spit up vomit in their sleep than choke.

Another fear is that the baby will develop a flat spot on its head from sleeping on its back. This is also not true. After all, traditional cultures that try to make their babies' heads flat (on purpose) have to tie a board to the babies' heads for months at a time! Even your firmest mattress is softer than that.

As long as you're watchful, your baby will be happy as a clam in a warm, soft baby blanket. But to be safe, do not keep soft bedding around your baby's sleeping area until at least a year old. And even then, to be safe, only have one thin blanket at a maximum in the crib.

I love soft baby blankets - in fact, I have a my own favorite blanket around the house that my kids aren't allowed to play with. But, to improve baby safety in the home, it's important to know when baby blankets are appropriate and when they should be shelved.

Amy was taken aback by a tone I haven't used with her since I was ranting about The Great Gatsby in her English class. I apologized for my teacherly tourette's but explained my theory on baby naming. Everybody, especially your family (and your friends), has an opinion on what you should name your kid. Grandma will want you to choose a family name even if it rhymes with asparagus; your mother will think her maiden name needs to be freed from the darkness of male oppression; your sister will say you stole that name from her; and your dad will hope you'll consider his favorite blues singer's moniker as a possible candidate.

If you do make the terrible mistake of letting people know the name you're considering, they'll pick at it more feverishly than a starving vulture on a petrified boar carcass. They'll say (insert your name here) is too dull or too exotic. Your kid will be forgotten or teased with a name like that. They'll say it doesn't sound right next to your last name (which also sucks by the way). Your name is too long or too short, too easy to forget or hard to pronounce, too girlish or boyish, or contains far too many consonants or vowels. Your choice is too Jewish-sounding for the Southwest or Arab enough to land him on a no-fly list. Your kid will positively change her name when she turns 18. And hate you for naming her that to boot.

What happens is that once a name is attached to an actual kicking and screaming baby, it adheres like gum to a shoe. This comes from a man who named his daughter Poppy and son London. Although I've heard of a few cases where parents have changed their child's name a few times in the hospital, once the child is named and presented to the world, it's pretty hard to switch. So my advice to expecting parents (and veterans who've been burned) is to keep your baby label a secret until you stick it to the kid.

It is impossible to predict if a child will succumb to SIDS. Medical research has failed to pinpoint a single exact cause but it has indicated various "risk factors" Knowing where the risk are can help you to eliminate them and thereby reduce the risk of SIDS by up to 75%. Use these guidelines to help provide a safe sleep environment for your baby.

Older mums (like me!) were probably told to put babies to sleep on their stomachs. However, medical opinion is unanimous. Do not smoke Do not smoke during pregnancy and do not allow others to smoke round your baby.
